What is Fascia?

Fascia is the connective tissue that encapsulates all of the body. It’s made up of collagen and coats the inner workings of the body. This tissue surrounds organs, bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and muscle compartments in a continuous interconnected fashion. Fascia is a thin, tough, tissue that supports and protects all tissues in the body. The best way to visualize this is to picture the inside of an orange with the white rind contacting every aspect of the fruit inside. This is how fascia is distributed throughout the body.

There are distinct interconnected tracks of fascia that bind groups of muscles together from the bottom to the top of the body. An impingement or adhesion within one area can lead to pain in a different part of the body based on the compensatory actions of the fascial net.  Fascial stretch therapy focuses on stretching these lines of connective tissue to correct any imbalances throughout your body’s musculoskeletal system.
